Road rally passes through Schuylkill
The Northeast Convoy, one leg of a network of multiple freedom convoys crossing the country, passed through Luzerne and Schuylkill counties Thursday afternoon, greeted by fans at many overpasses along the highway.
Locally, the Northeast Convoy was comprised of several hundred cars, trucks, vans and buses, many decorated with signs, banners and American flags.
Supporters manned many of the highway overpasses along the route.
One of the largest turnout of supporters was observed alongside Interstate 81 at Nanticoke, near Wilkes-Barre, where more than one dozen enthusiasts waved flags and political banners as the convoy passed by.
The convoy arrived in Schuylkill County at 1:45 p.m. As supporters yelled words of encouragement and waved flags, the truckers and motorists blasted horns as a sign of appreciation.
Such was the case in northern Schuylkill where a handful of greeters turned out at an I-81 overpass on Lofty Road in Delano Township.
The enthusiasts referred to themselves as patriots. They said they were friends and simply connected with each other via the internet. They said they were not part of an organized group nor representing any particular entity.
“I’m from McAdoo and my kids are home-schooled so I figured this is someplace we needed to be,” said one young mother who brought along her three children.
The convoy also was greeted by a few dozen gathered at the Exit 107 overpass in Norwegian Township.
The convoy was expected to arrive at Harrisburg by 4 p.m., according to the Schuylkill County Police Activity Facebook page.
The report also stated that the Western Convoy had over 7,000 vehicles involved.
According to published reports, the purpose of the convoy was to protest vaccine mandates and to promote freedom, an event was inspired by a Jan. 22 protest by truckers in Canada.
