Railroad crossing set for repairs

A railroad crossing in Nesquehoning that is deteriorating is getting repaired this spring.

On Wednesday, Nesquehoning Borough Council President David Hawk said that Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad is planning to replace the Industrial Road crossing in the Hauto Valley Estates portion of the borough either at the end of March or in April.

The railroad’s responsibility to the road around the rail is 2 feet from the rail, but Hawk said that railroad officials said that if the borough was planning on paving that deteriorated portion of road surrounding the crossing, it would help prep the road in that area for the borough.

There is also a drain pipe at that crossing that is owned by the borough and Hawk said railroad officials offered to help with the digging for that drain project at the same time.

The crossing at Park Avenue and Industrial Road will need to shut down for about a week during the project.

Councilman Frank Jacobs said the road surrounding the crossing is “bad,” but noted when the borough repaved a portion of Park Avenue, it was only able to complete up to the intersection of Fourth Avenue. The crossing is located just off the intersection of what would be Fifth Avenue if it was paved.

Council’s street committee agreed to go up to the crossing one day next week to look at the drain pipe and crossing.
