Ten area wrestlers reach 2A semis

BETHLEHEM - Gabe Erbe had a relatively short night.

The Tamaqua sophomore didn’t even wrestle a full period in his one match Friday at the District 11 Tournament.

Erbe took care of business quickly, pinning Schuylkill Haven’s Daeson Hasenauer in 1:49 to reach the semifinals at 113 pounds after a first round bye.

That was fine with Erbe, who is seeded second in the in the Class 2A bracket.

“I come here to win, and I just want to do better each time,” said Erbe. “I just try to go out there and see what happens; you take what you can get.

“I’m just happy I was able to go out there and get the job done.”

Erbe was one of 10 Times News area wrestlers to advance to the semifinals in the Class 2A tournament at Freedom’s Joseph J. McIntyre Gymnasium.

Northwestern and Jim Thorpe each placed three in the semis.

Dalton Clymer (152), Mason Brensinger (160) and Lucas Miller (172) made it for the Tigers, while Ridge Snyder (126), Gabe Heaney (152) and Caleb McDermott (189) advanced for the Olympians.

Lehighton’s Aidan Gruber (113), Palmerton’s Daniel Lucykanish (160) and Northern Lehigh’s Matt Frame (215) also moved on.

Gruber will wrestle Erbe in the 113-pound semifinal.

The sophomore reached the semis at 113 pounds by pinning North Schuylkill’s Kaden Casey in 3:25. Gruber, who had a bye in the first round, is the third seed.

“I dropped from 120 to 113,” Gruber said of his weight class. “I was trying to keep wrestling my partner (teammate) Lukas Ferguson, who is at 152. So I’ve just been trying to wrestle him and stay strong compared to the guys at this weight class.

“I’m used to wrestling heavier kids, stronger kids. Now I’m kind of the stronger kid.”

Snyder earned an 18-1 (4:41) technical fall against Tamaqua’s Chase Zeigenfuss in the first round. Snyder, seeded fourth, posted a 15-0 (2:53) tech fall against North Schuylkill’s Nate Sterner in the quarters.

The junior will wrestle top seed Hector Mateo of Saucon Valley in the semis. “I just wanted to get after it,” said Snyder. “I just wanted to wrestle to my full ability. I just wanted to try my hardest.

“This season has been fun. I’ve opened up a little bit, and am taking more shots this year, not sitting back. My coaches just told me to wrestle how I’ve been wrestling all year, and wrestle how you know you can.”

Clymer posted two pins en route to the semifinals.

The sophomore pinned Pine Grove’s William Ulsh in 1:00 in the first round before getting past Lehighton’s Lukas Ferguson, the fourth seed, in 1:40 to reach the semis.

Seeded fifth, Clymer is the defending champ at 145 pounds. He was also most outstanding wrestler of last year’s tournament.

“It’s been a frustrating season,” said Clymer, who entered the tournament with a 17-6 record. “Not at all what I wanted it to be. I started off at 160 pounds, just like last year, and dealt with some annoying injury stuff. I’m pretty much all better from that and feeling great, so dropping to 152 is a little bit more of a comfortable weight class for me. I feel a little bit stronger.

“I’m feeling good right now and I’m excited for tomorrow.”

Clymer wrestles top seed Liam Scrivanich of Saucon Valley in the semis.

The sophomore is healthy and loose. And motivated.

“When I first thought about it, I was actually pretty upset when my coach told me,” Clymer said of his seed. “Being a returning champ, it bothered me a little bit.

“But it actually took any kind of pressure off after winning last year. If anything I feel like I’m an underdog and have that mentality. I actually like it a lot.”

Heaney, seeded second, advanced to the semis by pinning Nate Armstrong of Palisades in 0:34 in the first round before posting a 4-0 decision over North Schuylkill’s Patrick Cooney in the quarters.

The senior will wrestle No. 6 seed Keegan Ramsey of Notre Dame in the semis. Ramsey posted an 8-0 major decision against No. 3 seed Dennis Lombardi of Palmerton in the quarters.

Brensinger, seeded fourth, pinned Corbin Christiano of Palisades in 0:59 in the first round before getting a 4-1 decision over Schuylkill Haven’s Nick Stoyer in the quarters at 160.

The senior will wrestle top seed Holden Garcia of Notre Dame in the semis.

Lucykanish, the No. 2 seed, posted a 6-2 decision over North Schuylkill’s Ricky Halford in the quarters, his only match after a first round bye.

The junior will wrestle the No. 6 seed, Gannon Brinker of Pen Argyl, in the semis. Brinkier edged Jim Thorpe’s Camron Tinajero, seeded third, 9-8 in quarters.

“It’s been a struggle,” said Lucykanish, who is working his way back from a back injury. “So it’s been a lot of work to come back from that.

“I’m fighting through it, so it feels really good to fight back and be able to get here. I put a lot of pressure on myself, but my expectation is to be in the final tomorrow and to win it, that’s always the goal.”

Miller, seeded fourth, pinned Northern Lehigh’s Chase Moffit in 2:38 in the semis before posting an 8-0 major decision over No. 5 seed Jared Newhall of Jim Thorpe in the quarters.

The junior faces top seed Jake Jones of Saucon Valley in the semis.

McDermott, the No. 4 seed, pinned Palmerton’s Colyn Mertz in 2:53 in the first round at 189 pounds before stopping North Schuylkill’s Jared Tinari, seeded fifth, in 5:10 in the quarters.

The senior faces top seed Ty Csencsits of Saucon Valley in the semis.

Frame, seeded fifth, pinned Jim Thorpe’s Blake Carroll in 0:39 in the first round before posting a 7-3 decision over Northwestern’s Noah Schlofer, the No. 4 seed, in the quarters.

The senior will wrestle top seed and undefeated Dante Mahaffey (21-0) of Saucon Valley in the semis.

Frame, who didn’t wrestle a year ago, is coming off a stellar football season that included a trip to the state semifinals in December, giving him a late start on his wrestling campaign.

“I’m a lot more comfortable on my feet,” said Frame, who noted his weight during football season was around 236 pounds. “I feel like I can move a lot quicker, which has definitely helped me.

“I’m still kind of new to the sport, so just learning as much as I can. It’s my last year, so I really just want to go out there and give it everything I have.”
