Three area girls teams earn top seeds
Three area girls teams have earned No. 1 seeds in the upcoming District 11 basketball playoffs.
The three - Marian, Palmerton and Jim Thorpe - are part of 13 Times News area squads that have qualified for the tournament, which begins Tuesday with a Class 6A girls first round game between Pleasant Valley and Liberty.
The Olympians, fresh off their Schuylkill League title run, are the top seed in Class 4A and have earned a bye into the semifinals. Northwestern, which upset the Blue Bombers in the Colonial League finals, is the second seed and will face an area foe in seventh-seeded Lehighton in the quarterfinal round.
Despite the loss to the Tigers in the CL title game, Palmerton’s rating in Class 3A puts Dan Beck’s club in the top spot. The Bombers, like Thorpe, won’t open play until the semifinal round.
Northern Lehigh, meanwhile, is also part of the 3A field, but will be playing a quarterfinal contest. The Bulldogs, seeded sixth, meet third-seeded Pine Grove on Friday.
In Class 1A, the Fillies are the only team with a winning record to easily claim the No. 1 seed. Marian faces a familiar Times News area opponent in the semifinals - Weatherly - on March 1.
While eight area girls teams will be competing for district gold, only five boys clubs will have a shot at earning a championship. They include Jim Thorpe, Marian, Northwestern, Palmerton and Panther Valley.
The Olympians and Tigers are part of a six-team Class 4A field. Thorpe, seeded fourth, takes on league rival North Schuylkill in the quarterfinals on Friday. Northwestern, the No. 6 seed, will be in action the same night when it takes on Bethlehem Catholic.
Palmerton and Panther Valley will also be participating in the same class - 3A - and both are slated to play quarterfinal contest. The Blue Bombers are seeded fourth and meet league foe Salisbury on Saturday. The sixth-seeded Panthers take on Notre Dame-Green Pond, hoping to advance to the semis.
The Colts are part of a four-team Class 2A field and will be off until the semifinal round starts on March 1. John Patton’s team is seeded third and takes on second-seeded Tri-Valley.
The championship and consolation rounds are scheduled for the weekend of March 4-5. The PIAA state playoffs open on March 8-9.
