Residents complain about Rt. 903

Penn Forest residents continue to complain about a stretch of Route 903 where a lot of crashes have occurred.

Tim Kennedy, who was one of three citizens who complained about speeding and dangerous driving on Route 903 at January’s township supervisors meeting, was back again this month to follow up.

The recent fatal crash not far from the township offices brought Kennedy out to ask about getting the speed limit lowered on Route 903.

He also suggested a flashing light in front of the ambulance garage. He pointed out that there have been nine deaths on Route 903 in the last year. He asked for better signs at the turnpike intersection - which he said “is dangerous.”

Supervisors’ chairman Roger Meckes told Kennedy that he reached out again to the state police, and was told that they were short-handed. Meckes is trying to set up a meeting with state Sen. John Yudichak and state Rep. Doyle Heffley, inviting the local Pennsylvania Department of Transportation manager to attend to speak about Route 903 safety. He promised Kennedy that he would ask all of them again for that meeting.

Some of the crashes on Route 903 from Times News archives:

• Dec. 24: Three people died in a two vehicle crash at 7:27 p.m. crash on Route 903 at the intersection of Rhododendron Road. Connor Dugan, 17, of Jim Thorpe was the driver of one vehicle. The second vehicle was Joshua Dean, 30, and Daejah Dean, 3, his daughter.

• Nov. 15: Barry K. Frohnheiser Jr., 56, of Jim Thorpe, driving a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado truck southbound when his vehicle crossed over the double yellow line and across the northbound lane at 9:36 a.m.

It is believed, troopers said, that the truck went down a slight embankment and began to overturn. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

• Aug. 7: Three New Jersey men died as a result of a crash at the Route 903 intersection with the turnpike.

State police at Fern Ridge said a 2018 Toyota Camry, driven by Bryan Nissen, 30, of Morris Plains, New Jersey, was traveling north on Route 903 at 8 p.m. and attempted to make a left turn on Route 476 North.

Troopers said a 2010 Jeep Cherokee, driven by Brett Knoll of Jim Thorpe, was traveling south on Route 903. Troopers noted that Knoll was traveling at an unsafe speed.

The Camry pulled in front of the Jeep and the two collided.

Two passengers in the Camry were pronounced dead at the scene by Carbon County Coroner Bob Miller. They were a 30-year-old man from Parlin, New Jersey, and a 25-year-old man from South Amboy, New Jersey.

A third passenger in the Camry, a 31-year-old man from Bayonne, New Jersey, was flown to Geisinger, where he died.

Nissen and Knoll were both taken to Lehigh Valley-Cedar Crest.

• June 21: Edward Coles, 66, of Jim Thorpe, died in a crash just after 10 a.m. along Route 903 in Penn Forest Township.

Troopers said Coles was operating a 2015 Toyota RAV4 and approaching the intersection with Yellow Run Road when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a guide rail end cap along the shoulder.

Upon impact, the vehicle spun counterclockwise and came to rest on the shoulder. While the vehicle was spinning, Coles was ejected.

Coles was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Luke’s Hospital, Lehighton. Coles was not wearing a seat belt. The vehicle sustained heavy damages.

• April 28: Two drivers were injured in a two-vehicle crash at 2:31 p.m. on April 28 along Route 903, at the intersection with the on ramp of the turnpike, in Penn Forest Township, Carbon County.

Troopers said John J. Petry, 69, of Clarks Summit, was driving a 2016 Volvo XC90 in the left lane at a steady red light, attempting to turn left. When the light turned green a vehicle in the oncoming left lane, flashed their lights, allowing Petry to turn. As he was making the turn a 2013 Dodge Charger, driven by Enrico Giordano, 61, of Jim Thorpe, who was traveling in the right lane of the oncoming traffic, struck the Volvo.

Petry suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest. Giordano and his passenger, Eric D. Giordano, 26, of Blakeslee, were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, Lehighton, for treatment.
