Second boy, 4, dies after fall into icy Schuylkill pond

Two young boys who fell into a frozen pond in Schuylkill County Wednesday evening have died.

State Police at Schuylkill Haven said the incident occurred at 5:39 p.m. in West Brunswick Township.

Schuylkill County 911 and PSP Schuylkill Haven received a call for two children, a 5-year-old and a 4-year-old, who had fallen into a frozen pond at 43 Molino Road.

The children’s mother was able to go into the pond and rescue her 4-year-old son. The 5-year-old was not seen on the pond.

The Schuylkill Haven Dive Team responded and located the 5-year-old under the water, and lifesaving measures began immediately.

The 5-year-old boy was taken via ambulance to Geisinger St. Luke’s Hospital in Orwigsburg, and then flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. He was pronounced dead at 9:12 p.m. Wednesday.

The 4-year-old boy was taken via ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest, and then flown to Nemours Albert I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware.

At 2:11 p.m. Thursday the boy was pronounced dead at the Wilmington hospital.

The cause of death was ruled accidental.

Also assisting at the scene were the West Brunswick, Deer Lake, and Orwigsburg fire companies.
