Tamaqua woman faces charges after picking up dropped phone

A Tamaqua woman has been charged with theft of property lost by mistake.

State police at Frackville said that Christine Cusatis picked up a Google Pixel XL cellphone that was dropped on the floor at the Walmart in Rush Township on Oct. 22.

The victim said she had finished shopping when she attempted to win a toy from a machine for her grandchildren. Her granddaughter accidentally dropped the phone. Video from the store had Cusatis taking the $479 phone, charging documents say.

Police attempted to find Cusatis, who at the time was wanted on a bench warrant from Cumberland County. Coaldale Police charged her Dec. 25. State police questioned her about the incident. She admitted taking the phone but claimed she gave it to a friend to return to Walmart. She was willing to pay the victim so she would not get in trouble because she was on parole, police said.

A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. March 1 in District Magistrate Stephen Bayer’s courtroom, Tamaqua.
