What do you do when you’re flying an airplane and discover a landing gear - an essential tool for landing - is missing?

A coolheaded Glen Millen said you merely go through “emergency procedures, just like it says in the book.” Millen, a pilot at the Jacob Arner Memorial Airport in Mahoning Township, did exactly that on Saturday.

His cautious but professional manner ended about 45 minutes of suspense as he brought a Piper Tomahawk down in snow-and-ice-covered field next to the runway, causing virtually no damage to the aircraft and resulting in no injuries to either himself or a student pilot who was with him.
