Local Roundup: Results from Feb. 1

Northwestern posted victories over Northern Lehigh in boys and girls basketball action on Tuesday.

In the loss, the Bulldogs’ Emma Niebell reached 1,000 points in her career.

Other winners included the Marian boys basketball team, Pleasant Valley girls basketball team and Jim Thorpe wrestling.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Northwestern-No. Lehigh

A 15-point fourth quarter lifted Northwestern to a 44-40 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh.

Dylan Witkowski sparked the Tigers (10-10, 10-7) with a game-high 15 points in a contest that was tied 29-29 heading into the fourth quarter. Ethan Lazarus and Cade Christopher chipped in with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Aiden Parvel finished with 12 points for the Bulldogs (3-17; 2-14), while Izaiah Ramos added 10.

Williams Valley-Marian

Marian used a big first half to roll to a 82-57 Schuylkill League win over Williams Valley.

The Colts (10-5 overall; 5-3 SL) took a 54-29 lead over the Vikings into intermission, as Brendan Lonergan netted 10 of his game-high 20 points in the first half, while Frank Valente posted 16 of his 19 in the first 16 minutes of play.

Logan Fritz and Julius Currie followed with 13 points and 10 points, respectively.

Alex Asenbach led the Vikings (0-16; 0-9) with a team-high 16 points, while Brady Evans recorded 14 and Gavin Sutton chipped in with 12.

The Eagles took a 42-40 lead into the fourth quarter, and used a 16-13 edge in the final period to secure the win.

Kade Hominger finished with 18 points for the Eagles (11-7, 7-4). Carson Kerstetter added 17 points, while Issac Thomas contributed 12.

Jack Lorenz had 18 points for the Tribe (4-14, 1-10). Brayden Lutz chipped in with 13 points, while Joe Roth added 12.

Connor Dillon paced the Blue Raiders (7-12, 4-7) with a team-high 13 points, while Nathan Gregoire added 12.

Pocono Mountain East pulled away for a 64-51 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Tamir Thompson sparked the Cardinals (3-14, 1-12) with 18 points, while Djay Sanchez finished with 14. Sebastian Fermin and Taemus Jones contributed with 13 and 11 points, respectively, for East, which outscored PV 20-6 in the final quarter.

Jarod Moore led all scorers with a game-high 20 points for the Bears (3-13, 3-10), scoring eight of those in the second quarter. Donald Francois, Jr. added 16.

Bryan Rivera netted eight of his game-high 19 points in the opening quarter as the Blue Devils (15-3, 8-1) took a 25-11 lead, while Owen Kosar chipped in with eight of his 13 points in the period. Matt Alvarez added 10.

Frankie Willis finished with 14 points for the Wreckers (1-14, 0-8), while Timmy Maguschak contributed 13.

Northern Lehigh’s Emma Niebell scored her 1,000th-career point, but Northwestern picked up a 58-45 Colonial League win.

Paige Sevrain sparked the Tigers (17-4, 15-2) in the opening half, as she posted 14 of her game-high 28 points through the first 16 minutes of play. Cara Thomas helped NW keep that comfortable lead in the second half, as she went on to score 10 of her 16 points over the final two quarters.

Niebell scored 21 of her team-high 28 points in the second half for the Bulldogs (11-8, 9-7). Cadence Whalen added seven points in the setback.

Jim Thorpe closed its Schuylkill League schedule with a 42-31 victory over host Blue Mountain.

The Olympians used five pins and two forfeits to register the win.

All five of Thorpe’s falls came in the first period, with Cam Tinajero’s six-pointer at 160 pounds coming in just 52 seconds. Other pins by the Olympians came from Nikolas Schwartz (138), Gabe Heaney (152), Aiden Sterling (172) and Jared Newhall (189).

Thorpe finished 1-4 in league action, while the Eagles ended at 0-5.

Jim Thorpe edged Panther Valley for a 59-56 win.

Aaron Curran led four players in double figures for the Olympians with a team-high 14 points, while Cole Lazorick followed with 13.

Jason Gehris, who had three three-pointers, and Logan O’Connor, both finished with 11 points.

Brody Breiner led all scorers with 27 points for the Panthers, while Connor Penberth finished with four three-pointers as part of his 18 points.

Blue Mountain-Lehighton

Lehighton posted a 61-40 win over Blue Mountain.

Blake Roberts had a game-high 22 points for the Indians, while Cole Dietz contributed 15, and Jaxson Strauss chipped in with 10.

Weatherly-Tamaqua

Weatherly defeated Tamaqua, 26-18.

The Wreckers’ DeAnna Pugh led all scorers with 19 points.

Anna Ackerman netted a team-high five points for the Blue Raiders.

Weatherly escaped with a 23-19 win over Tamaqua.

DeAnna Pugh had a game-high 19 points to lead the Wreckers, while Lauren Ligenza paced the Blue Raiders with 11 points.

Panther Valley posted a 29-21 victory over Lehighton.

PV’s Lucy Kocha topped all scorers with 22 points.
