Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 27

The Jim Thorpe and Marian girls both posted wins on Thursday to stay atop the standings in the Schuylkill League.

The Olympians defeated Pine Grove and continue to hold first place in Division 1 play, while the Fillies downed Shenandoah Valley and remain tied with Mahanoy Area in the loss column in Division 3.

The Northern Lehigh girls also posted a victory to stay in the hunt for a Colonial League playoff berth.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Pine Grove-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe’s defense shut out Pine Grove in the second quarter, and the Olympians cruised to a 57-26 Schuylkill League victory over Pine Grove.

While Thorpe held the Cardinals without a point in the second period, Olivia Smelas scored 10 to extend the Olympians lead to 27 points by halftime.

Mackenzie Yuhas finished with a game-high 14 points, while Skyler Searfoss contributed 13. Smelas ended with 12, with Leah Snisky chipping in with 10.

The win lifted Jim Thorpe to 15-1 overall and 10-0 in the league.

Marian-Shenandoah

Marian jumped out to an early lead and were never threatened in posting a 52-30 Schuylkill League victory over Shenandoah Valley.

Carly Minchhoff scored 10 of her game-high 13 points in the first quarter as the Fillies, who won their eighth game in a row, gained a 10-point advantage.

The winners also received 11 points from both Ashley Pleban and Frankie Martinelli.

Faith Gotshall led the Blue Devils with 10 points.

Marian improved to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the league.

Northern Lehigh rebounded from a slow start to gain a 51-42 Colonial League victory over Salisbury.

The Bulldogs trailed by nine points after the first quarter before mounting their comeback.

Emma Niebell recorded 20 of her team-high 23 points after the first eight minutes, while Katelyn Barthold contributed 14 points to the win. Nolehi also received seven points from Cadence Peters.

For the Falcons, Quinn Wittman tallied 23 points.

The Bulldogs, who have won four straight games, improved to 9-7 overall and 7-6 in the league.

Pottsville-Panther Valley

Pottsville’s three-point shooting led the Crimson Tide to a 57-37 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

The winners connected on 12 shots from behind the arc, including four from Jules Plachko.

Plachko finished with a team-high 17 points, while Julia Mowalski had three treys and ended with 16 points.

PV’s Sera Robin also excelled from three-point range, finishing with five of them and a game-high 19 points. The Panthers (1-15; 0-10) also receiced 12 points from Maddison Maynard.

Weatherly-Nativity

Weatherly hung with Nativity for a quarter, but the Golden Girls pulled away after that en route to a 49-24 Schuylkill League victory.

The Wreckers, behind six points from Emma Kane, only trailed by a 17-11 margin after the opening frame but managed just seven points in the middle quarters.

Kami Abdo collected a game-high 17 points for Nativity, while Madison Kramer added 11.

Kane finished with 13 points for Weatherly, with 11 of them coming at the free throw line. Bethany House also chipped in with nine points.

The loss dropped the Wreckers to 4-12 overall and 1-8 in the league.

Pleasant Valley’s tough luck continued, as it dropped its fourth straight game by four points or less.

Xavier Spears scored a team-high 14 points for Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg to gain a 61-60 non-league victory over the Bears.

PV jumped out to an eight-point lead in the first quarter behind eight points from Jarod Moore, but the Spartans (10-2) outscored their opponents by 14 points in the middle frames.

Donald Francois paced the Bears with 16 points, while Moore ended with 14.

The loss dropped Pleasant Valley to 3-12.

Chase Fenstermaker scored nine of his game-high 19 points in the first quarter as the Falcons raced to an early 14-point lead.

The winners, who improved to 10-7, also received 11 points from both Jackson Lopez and Tyson Utesch.

Aiden Parvel paced the Bulldogs with nine points, while Nick Buskirk chipped in with six.

The loss dropped Nolehi to 3-15 overall and 2-12 in the league.

A strong second half helped Northwest Area pull away from Weatherly for a 56-30 non-league victory.

Gary McLendon scored a game-high 21 points for the Rangers, who led by just a point at halftime before outscoring the Wreckers by a 34-9 margin over the final two periods.

Weatherly received a team-high 12 points from Frankie Willis, while Timmy Maguschak contributed eight.

The loss dropped the Wreckers to 1-11.

Tamaqua split its Schuylkill League meet with Mahanoy Area.

The Blue Raider boys posted a 108-25 victory, while the girls dropped a close 91-84 decision.

Jathan Krall collected individual firsts in both the 200 and 500 freestyle, while Vincenzio Valentine (200 IM), Stephen Behun (50 free), Jack Tharp (100 free) and Brandon Long (100 Back) also added wins.

In the girls competition, Mia Jones (diving) and Maura Walker (100 free) both won an event.

The Wreckers received 14 points from both DeAnna Pugh and Jelly Reiner.

7TH GRADE

Minersville-Panther Valley

Minersville edged Panther Valley by a 21-19 score.

PV’s Lucy Kocha led all scorers with 15 points.

Weatherly-Berwick

DeAnna Pugh scored a game-high 21 points to lead Weatherly to a 36-18 win over Berwick.

The Wreckers also received 11 points from Bria Gordick and four from Jillian Russel.

Sch. Haven-Panther Valley

Schuylkill Haven rallied for a 36-28 victory over Panther Valley.

Benjamin Baneravage scored eight points for the Panthers, while Gino Williams added seven.

7TH GRADE

Sch. Haven-Panther Valley

Panther Valley edged Schuylkill Haven, 28-24, for its first win of the season.

Kayden Koerber led the Panthers with 15 points, while Derek Lazar chipped in with seven.
