Local roundup: Results from Jan. 21
Panther Valley pulled out a dramatic overtime victory over Blue Mountain in boys basketball action on Friday.
Elsewhere, the Palmerton boys and girls picked up basketball victories; Northwestern got a boys basketball win; Tamaqua posted a swimming sweep; and the Coal Cracker Wrestling Tournament got underway in Lehighton.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Blue Mountain-Panther Vy.
A late Drew Kokinda three-pointer sent the game into overtime and Panther Valley made it count as it posted a 58-53 Schuylkill League victory over Blue Mountain.
The Eagles (9-4, 5-3) rallied from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit to grab a 46-43 lead late in regulation. But Kokinda’s three tied the game, and Stephen Hood and Chase Weaver combined for all 12 of their team’s points in the extra session as the Panthers pulled out the win.
Hood finished with 21 points, including seven in overtime, to lead PV (7-5, 4-4). Weaver added five OT points and ended with 19.
Carson Kerstetter topped Blue Mountain with 21 points.

Dylan Witkowski led four players in double figures for the Tigers (8-7), scoring 17 points. Ethan Lazarus added 13 points, while Cade Christopher and Cayden Fitch each scored 10.
Bryann Rivera had 15 points for the Roughies (0-13).

The Red Rovers (13-0), who have an average margin of victory of 24.8 points per game, jumped out to a 50-7 halftime lead.
Megan Elias and Anye Staton each scored 13 points to pace Easton. Katelyn Honadel had five points to lead PV (6-7).

WRESTLING
Coal Cracker Tournament
The first day of action at the Coal Cracker Tournament saw a number of area wrestlers position themselves for a medal – and maybe more.
Jim Thorpe and host Lehighton each placed three wrestlers into the quarterfinals.
Aidan Gruber (120), Lukas Ferguson (145) and Wyatt Sherer (215) advanced for the Tribe, while Ridge Snyder (126), Gabe Heaney (152) and Jared Newhall (172) moved on for the Thorpe.
Palmerton’s Derek King (132) and Dennis Lombardi (145) are also through to the quarters, as is Tamaqua’s Gabe Erbe (113).
Many others are still alive in the consolation rounds at the 45-team tournament, which continues at 9 a.m. today with the girls tournament.
All wrestling on Saturday will be held at Lehighton’s Elementary Center with the exception of the JV Tournament being held at the high school.
The championship rounds are set to begin around 4 p.m.
SWIMMING
Sch. Haven-Tamaqua
Tamaqua swept past Schuylkill Haven, with the Raiders posting a 114-56 victory in the girls’ competition, and a 101-28 triumph on the boys’ side.
Gabby Blasko (500 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) posted multiple event wins for the Tamaqua girls, and was also part of two winning relay teams.
Jathan Krall (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Brandon Long (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke) had multiple event wins for the Raiders in the boys’ meet.
