Letter to the editor: Pipeline wouldn’t benefit Carbon County

Editor:

The demise of the PennEast pipeline has not had and will not have any effect on residential gas prices because the PennEast pipeline would not have provided gas to any Carbon County residential customers - not one. It would have provided gas to only one industrial-scale user and that is it.

The stated purpose of the pipeline was to deliver gas to New Jersey, but I suspect the gas would have ended up in Europe or Asia where the gas companies can get four times the domestic rate. Once again the plan was for Carbon County to absorb the destruction perpetrated by this pipeline while Carbon County residents would get none of the benefits. If you are surprised, you haven’t been paying attention.

In fact, skyrocketing international demand for gas is the reason our rates are so high. We have to compete with those European and Asian customers. If we want to see our gas prices go down, we should call upon Washington to reinstate the prohibition on exporting our American gas overseas. But I will bet that the gas companies and our Pennsylvania politicians who enjoy their campaign donations will oppose that tooth and nail.
