Lower Towamensing board reorganizes without Kuehner
The Lower Towamensing Township board of supervisors held its reorganization meeting Monday.
Supervisor Terry Kuehner, who was elected in November, was absent from the meeting.
The Carbon County District Attorney has asked a judge to block Kuehner from taking part in township actions because of his prior criminal record. A scheduled hearing in the case was continued earlier Monday so he could get a lawyer.
The DA is arguing that Kuehner’s past criminal convictions disqualify him from serving. A clause in the state constitution says that people convicted of ‘infamous crimes’ are not allowed to hold public office.
Monday’s reorganization meeting was rescheduled from Jan. 3. The original meeting was canceled without any notice to the public. On Friday, the township advertised the new date.
“We apologize for that. We now are updating the website. We’ll be putting up our scheduled meeting dates for the rest of the year,” said Brent Green, Chairman of the Lower Towamensing Township Supervisors.
Green said the meeting had been postponed from Jan. 3 because the board lacked a quorum. Resident Robert Sikorsky, said he understood why the meeting was canceled, but said residents were left standing outside the building that night with no notice that the meeting wasn’t taking place.
Green said he and Supervisor Connie Brown planned to attend the originally scheduled meeting, but had conflicts at work. He said the reorganization meeting has been delayed in past years.
Green said that the supervisors did not have access to the township website at the time to post an update.
During Tuesday’s meeting, the supervisors discussed the open secretary-treasurer position. Green said that the township received some applicants last year but put the process on hold. Now, they want to accept more applicants.
In the meantime, Green said that the supervisors are returning calls and messages to the township when they can.
“We are working on getting someone in the office, working to return phone calls and emails. We ask they leave just one message with their name and number,” Green said.
Green said that the township has put on hold any rentals of the Stoney Ridge Park and Recreation Center until a new secretary is hired.
He said the township has been making payroll.
During the reorganization, Green was reappointed chairman. Brown was appointed vice chairman.
The board reappointed James Nanovic, Township solicitor; Holly Heintzelman, zoning hearing board solicitor; township engineer, Carbon Engineering; Duane Dellecker, zoning officer/building code official; Rory Koons, Emergency Management Coordinator.
James Ord, Keith George and James Desrosiers received reappointments.
The supervisors also agreed to give the power to sign checks to two supervisors until a treasurer is found.
