Palmerton has new police chief, mayor

A new police chief and mayor were sworn in at Palmerton’s reorganization meeting Monday.

Timothy Kromer was sworn in as the new borough police chief following the retirement announcement of Randy Smith.

Kromer was hired as a part-time officer in May 2002, and has been a full-time officer since December 2002.

Smith’s retirement date is Jan. 31, after 40 years.

Kromer said, “I’m appreciative of the opportunity, to bring it current and continue to move forward.”

Kromer said the department currently has nine full-time officers (counting Randy Smith).

Upon Smith’s retirement, he said the department will look to hire a full-time officer.

Kromer’s salary was set at $83,000.

Don Herrmann was sworn in to a four-year term as mayor, as he replaces former Mayor William Gallagher.

Hermann has volunteered on the Palmerton Memorial Park Association Board, spent time painting, planting flowers and cleaning up the pool property. He has also been a volunteer coach with local youth soccer, basketball and baseball programs.

Council reappointed Councilman Terry Costenbader as president and Councilman Kris Hoffner as vice president.

Those sworn in for four-year terms on council include Hoffner, along with Councilmen Richard Nothstein, Michael Ballard, and newcomer Cory Kepner

• Donna McGarry, borough manager, secretary, treasurer and street commissioner.

• Kim Rodrigues, assistant secretary, open records officer.

• Jenny Cheng-Serfass, borough solicitor.

• Jeffrey Stewart, labor attorney.

• Keystone Engineering, general engineer.

• Entech Engineering, sewer and water engineer.

• Duane Dellecker, zoning and code enforcement officer, health officer.

• Clark Ritter, code enforcement agent.

• Berks Envirotech Allen Madeira sewer enforcement officer, with Brian Coburn and Seth Bacon as alternates.
