A New York state driver has been charged after leading police in Monroe County and New Jersey, on a high speed chase Sunday.
According to state police at Stroudsburg, at 12:45 p.m. they were alerted that New Jersey state police were in pursuit of a black Chevrolet Equinox with a Louisiana registration, whose driver had refused to stop. The suspect vehicle was last seen traveling westbound on Interstate 80 and eventually spotted by Pennsylvania troopers at mile marker 302 on I-80. Troopers attempted to make a stop but the driver continued westbound at a high speed and managed to avoid spike strips near mile marker 295. The driver continued weaving in and out of lanes until his vehicle struck guide rails near marker 289, disabling the vehicle.
The driver was taken into custody and identified as Yuriy Amirov, 30, of Brooklyn. During the incident a trooper was injured and required medical treatment.
Amirov was charged with felony counts of aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding police and related offenses. He was arraigned before a district judge and committed to the county prison in Snydersville. Criminal charges are pending in New Jersey.
