First significant snowfall could arrive Thursday night into Friday

Shovel?

What shovel?

It also wouldn’t hurt to get reacquainted with gloves, scrapers and ice melt too as our coverage area awaits what could be its first significant snowfall of the season.

Paul Walker, senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, said it appears there will be some snow moving in late Thursday night and continuing until at least Friday morning.

“There’s going to be a storm moving across Tennessee, and then making a turn toward the northeast,” Walker said. “Where exactly the track and the strength of the storm could depend on how much snow we get here.”

As of now, Walker said he anticipates it could be a few inches of snow, possibly up to 6 inches, but added, “It’s tough to call at this point.”

What isn’t up for debate is that for some places, it will likely mark the first significant snowstorm of the season following a mild fall.

Walker cautioned motorists to make certain they are ready to deal with the remnants of the storm.

“Be sure they have their car prepared for winter,” he said. “Have the car prepared for very cold weather, also tires for snow when traveling, emergency kits including blankets and shovels.”

Walker said temperatures should likely reach the low 40s Wednesday, before the cold snap settles in.

Thursday, he said temperatures are expected to be in the mid-30s, and upper 20s by evening.

By Friday, Walker said temperatures could struggle to get above freezing after the snow ends.

“We’ve had a minor winter so far, an above normal November and December,” he said. “It’s the cycle we’re in.”
