Towamensing supervisors discuss garbage concerns
The Towamensing Township Board of Supervisors held their end-of-year meeting on Dec. 28 at the municipal building.
One of the main topics of discussion during the meeting revolved around garbage disposal on Kennetta Lane, a private road owned by Kenneth George.
Supervisor and roadmaster Scott Mosier noted that aside from road conditions and brush, the steepness of the road was causing the garbage trucks to bottom out during garbage collection.
Board members discussed the possibility of implementing a dumpster to reduce difficulties with the garbage trucks.
Mosier noted the possibility of constructing a cul-de-sac to help the garbage trucks turn around easier.
“A simple solution would be to put a cul-de-sac at the end. There’s no houses going up the dirt road section, so if they came up the blacktop section and could get the truck turned around to go back down the blacktop section, it would be fine.”
Chairman Guy Seifert took issue with this idea due to legal concerns surrounding the idea.
“Why are we gonna open ourselves up to litigation for a little bit of damage we do to a truck? It’s gonna be a lot less than what we’re gonna get into with litigation.”
Ultimately, Seifert suggested holding a series of workshops in order to work out a solution with residents.
“I think it would be more productive to sit down with a workshop, send a letter to every one of those residents and say, ‘Sit down, we need to talk about your situation cause Kenny’s not gonna be around forever and this is a situation you’re aware of’ and try to facilitate a change before it falls into litigation.”
The board decided to have solicitor Tom Nanovic write a letter organizing these workshops starting with the Kennetta development in hopes of weighing options.
Aside from a letter, residents should also expect a phone call regarding these workshops.
Following a Kennetta Lane workshop, they plan to potentially host separate workshops regarding Clearview Drive and Teaberry Lane as well.
Seifert ended the garbage discussion by encouraging residents to attend these workshops, saying that it is imperative that they all show up.
The meeting concluded with John Kleintop being sworn in for the six-year term on the board of supervisors. The Board of Supervisors reorganizational meeting will be today at 5 p.m., and the next planning meeting will be held Jan. 10 at 7 p.m.
