The Jim Thorpe girls basketball team added a championship to its impressive start to the season as the unbeaten Olympians captured the Pocono Mountain West Tournament on Thursday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Jim Thorpe built a commanding first half lead and rolled to a 56-37 victory over the host Panthers in the Pocono Mountain West Tournament.

The foul line turned out be a key ingredient for the Olympians as they were an impressive 24-for-29 (83 percent) at the charity stripe.

Skyler Searfoss and Olivia Smelas led Jim Thorpe with 14 points apiece as both players went a perfect 8-for-8 at the foul line. Leah Snisky added 12 points.

The Panthers’ Vataijah Davis led all scorers with 25 points.

Jim Thorpe players took home three individual honors as Searfoss was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while Smelas and Leila Hurley were named to the All Tournament team.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Northwestern breezed to a 55-34 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

The Tigers built a double-digit first quarter lead and never looked back.

Dylan Witkowski netted 17 of his game-high 22 points in the first half to lead the Tigers. Cayden Fitch and Gavin Nelson followed with 14 and 12 points respectively.

Izaiah Ramos led the Bulldogs with 15 points.

WRESTLING

Palmerton at

Gov. Mifflin Tournament

Three Palmerton wrestlers earned medals at the Governor Mifflin Holiday Tournament.

Dennis Lombardi led the Bombers with a second-place finish in the 152-pound weight class.

Derek King had a seventh-place finish at 132 pounds, while Kellen Trotter finished eighth at 106 pounds.
