Sober, safe New Year’s event planned in Tamaqua

The public is invited to a free event at the Perla Enterprise Building in Tamaqua on Friday.

Located at 105 W. Broad St., free food, nonalcoholic drinks, games, activities for children and adults will occur from 8 p.m. to midnight.

A disc jockey will play music.

A big-screen TV is set up for attendees to watch the ball drop in New York.

Masks are available but not required.

“It’s in a big gym, so we can practice social distancing,” Kerri Scheitrum, regional director of New Roots Recovery Support Center, said Wednesday.

New Roots, Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet, and Hope and Coffee are co-hosting the event, which is sponsored by the owners of the building who let them use the gym rent free.

The three groups contacted them because they knew about the space.

Scheitrum said all are welcome to attend. She said the event is “a sober, safe New Year’s and a place for people who are in recovery to enjoy the holiday.”

Those needing transportation can contact Safer Streets or Scheitrum. Her number is 570-900-1544. Deadline is today.

“We’re hoping for at least 100 or 150 people,” she said.

Donations made the event possible.
