There were no highway deaths recorded in Carbon County over the long Christmas weekend, but police reported scores of accidents in the waning hours last night as rain coated the highways with ice.
A major tie-up occurred on the Mansion House Hill between 1:30-3 p.m. yesterday when an estimated 100 cars were unable to negotiate that incline.
The rash of accidents occurred as ice melting from the mountainside flowed onto the roadway and froze. Unwary motorists struck it and their cars skidded in all directions. Many escaped damage and personal injuries, although not all of the motorists were as fortunate.
By midafternoon, the State Highways Department had used a full truckload of salt on the hill.
