Traffic stop yields nearly $1,500, drugs, weapons
Two men are charged after police recovered drugs, guns and nearly $1,500 during a traffic stop in Carbon County on Thanksgiving Day.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Justin Magluilo of the Pennsylvania State Police, Lehighton barracks, in the case against Jonathan Groegler and Brandin Brong:
At 12:15 p.m. Nov. 25, Magluilo was on patrol when he saw a beige 2007 Audi-A4 traveling in the right eastbound lane of Route 248 toward the cantilever and its intersection with Route 873.
Magluilo saw the vehicle travel 76 mph in a posted 55 mph zone. The vehicle accelerated while it continued traveling eastbound on 248.
Due to heavy traffic conditions, the car turned right onto 873, and traveled south into Washington Township, where it made a right into the parking lot of Appalachian Scenic Trail but failed to activate its turn signal.
Magluilo conducted a traffic stop. The driver was Jonathan Groegler, 33, of Lehighton, and Brong, 28, of Walnutport, was in the front seat.
A loaded Ruger P95 9 mm pistol with an obliterated serial number was located on the driver’s floor of the vehicle, while ammunition, knives, brass knuckles, two pistol BB guns, drug paraphernalia, suspected methamphetamine, packaging materials, scales and cellphones were also found within the vehicle. Brong had $1,493.
Groegler was taken into custody, where it was learned his operating privileges were suspended, DUI related. Additionally, Brong, was taken into custody and provided a false name.
Groegler admitted to being in possession of a gun and controlled substances, while Brong admitted to providing a false name and date of birth to law enforcement.
Police determined Groegler was under the influence of both cannabis and a stimulant. Groegler refused chemical testing.
Groegler faces charges of possessing firearm with manufacturer number altered; firearms not to be carried without license; manufacture, delivery, or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; make repairs/sell offensive weapon; intentional possession of a controlled substance by person not registered; use/possession of drug paraphernalia; driving under the influence of alcohol/controlled substance; driver’s license suspended/revoked; exceed 55 mph in other location by 21 mph; turning movements and required signals; failure to use safety belt - driver and front seat occupant; careless driving; and reckless driving.
Brong faces charges of manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; make repairs/sell; intentional possession controlled substance by person not registered; use/possession of drug paraphernalia; false identification to law enforcement officer.
Both are incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility. Groegler’s bail was set at $30,000. Brong’s is $20,000. They have preliminary hearings Dec. 8 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
