2021 general election: Carbon County breaks ties in 29 write-in races

The process of breaking ties from the general election of Nov. 2 took place last Friday in the Carbon County Elections Office, Jim Thorpe, where 29 ties resulted due to the write-in vote process.

Write-in votes are generally utilized by voters where there are no candidates on the ballots. To be successful, a person only needs one write-in vote, or one more than another candidate.

To break the ties, office personnel, under the direction of Lisa Dart, who hears the elections bureau, put numbered balls in a box with candidates, if they are present, taking turns pulling one of them. The balls are numbered 1-10, with the person who pulled the number closest to 1 being deemed the winner of that respective race.

In one particular case, East Penn Township, Sydney Wernett was the winner of a tie for a two-year term as auditor, however, since she does not reside in the township, the office is declared open without a winner. Wernett was an unsuccessful candidate for clerk of courts.
