Last meeting for some Weatherly Area School Board members

The Nov. 10 regular meeting of the Weatherly Area School Board was the last for a third of the board.

Board President Girard Fewins and members Brian O’Donnell and Chad Obert have served out their terms, and chose not to seek re-election. O’Donnell and Obert attended this meeting. Fewins was absent.

O’Donnell, in his final report as board liaison with the PSBA, took a moment to thank everyone, adding, “It’s been an odd and pleasant experience these last six years.” He closed with a wish of “good luck to the new board members.”

Early during the meeting, student Tim Maguschak was recognized for being senior of the month for October.

Maguschak then spoke to the board and offered recognition to seniors Ricky Ray and Rhianne Markovchick, who have qualified to compete for this school year’s High School Heisman Awards scholarship.

Congratulations were offered to the boys’ cross-country team who earned a 16th-place finish at the state championships.

In board business, members were split on the approval of bills. Thomas Connors Jr. voted no when the bills were presented, objecting to payments to Umbriac Trucking Co. (due to their paving work being incomplete), and to engineers Brinkash - also relating to the paving.

The other six board members voted to approve, with Fewins absent and Gerald Grega’s seat vacated.

The board was a unanimous 7-0 on approving the Cranberry Quilters Guild’s request to use the middle school gym and cafeteria for a weekend quilt show in September. It was noted that this depends on where the district stands on COVID-19 and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines as the summer goes on.

The board decided to add a Transportation/Property Committee meeting at 5 p.m. this Thursday.

There were no public comments.

Letters from people who would be interested in filling the vacant board seat should be sent to the WASD Business Office. The seat should be filled at the Board’s Dec. 1 meeting.
