Veterans Day Parade set for Saturday in Tamaqua

Tamaqua American Legion Post C.H. Berry 173 will host its Veterans Day Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Sponsored by the Tamaqua American Legion Post 173, staging will begin at 9 a.m. by the old Maff Motors building on East Broad Street.

The Legion Honor Guard will fire a volley over the Tamaqua War Monument.

The parade will run from East Broad Street proceeding west on Route 209 (Broad Street) to the end of town at Swatara Street.

Among those who will participate are the American Legion Honor Guard, Tamaqua High School Marching Band, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, military vehicles including the Elks Lodge in Tamaqua, Coaldale American Legion, and more.

The grand marshal is Roy Turner, 85, of Barnesville. Turner honorably served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Layluh Creitz, 6, will be the Poppy Queen. Her mother is Amy Creitz, a five-year member, and grandparents are Lynee and Ron Creitz. Layluh also has a brother, Grayson.

There will be a service by the Legion Post after the parade.

David Meredith, the post adjutant, and parade coordinator, said the parade is a way for the post to show its appreciation.

“We honor veterans and those in the military service who have served; they put their time in, most of them are through the draft,” Meredith said. “Also those military personnel who are currently deployed, those who have volunteered.”

Meredith encouraged spectators to attend and cheer on the parade.

“It’s very significant to honor those veterans,” he said. “It’s very important for people to come out curbside to honor those in the parade.”
