Republican Kevin Zelienka defeated Democrat Fran Heaney to become the next treasurer for Carbon County.
Less than half a percentage point separated the two candidates. Zelienka received 6,979 votes to Heaney’s 6,523.
Zelienka, a political newcomer, said that serving the public has always been an aspiration. He said in his new job, he will rely on his experience from his career, including operating his own graphic design business for 35 years.
“I love Carbon County, I love this town, so I want to serve the people of this area,” Zelienka said.
One reason he was attracted to the treasurer’s office was his high opinion of the work done by retiring Treasurer Ronald Sheehan during his 20-plus years in office.
Zelienka thanked his family and supporters. He said that he received a warm reception wherever he went in Carbon County during his campaign.
The race was a challenge, he said, and required a lot of hard work. But he is ready to work hard again to serve the county as treasurer.
“I’m looking forward to starting on day one, being fiscally responsible to the taxpayers of Carbon County,” Zelienka said.
The county treasurer will earn $66,346 in 2022 and a 2% increase is scheduled for 2023 for a salary of $67,673.
