Lehighton and Panther Valley voters decide contested school board races

Of the five school districts in the Carbon County area, only the Lehighton and Panther Valley districts had general election contests on Tuesday.

In Jim Thorpe, Palmerton and Weatherly, those races were decided in the Primary Election, whereas voters in Banks Township and Beaver Meadows parts of the county participated in balloting for the Hazleton Area School District.

Panther Valley

In the Panther Valley, five candidates ran for four four-year terms, including four of them who won both Democratic and Republican nominations in May. All four of them defeated Irene Breslin Genther, who appeared on the ballot Tuesday as a “no party” candidate.

Topping the ballot was Shawn J. Hoben, who tallied 1,708 votes, followed by Renee DeMelfi, 1,298; Steven Foster, 1,254; and Keith A. Krapf, 1,008. Genther finished fifth with 963 votes.

The district includes balloting in Lansford, Nesquehoning and Summit Hill in Carbon County and Coaldale in Schuylkill County.

Lehighton

For the four four-year terms on the Lehighton board, there were five candidates. The winners were Joy Beers with 2,485 votes; Barbara A. Bowes, 2,474; Walter Zlomsowitch, 2,371; and Kerry L. Sittler, 2,363. Beers, Bowes and Sittler appeared as both Democratic and Republican candidates while Zlomsowitch was a Republican candidate.

Losing out was Jennifer Laible, who appeared only as a Democratic candidate and tallied 1,497 votes.

Zlomsowitch was the lone candidate for a two-year term that was up for grabs. He tallied 2,496 token votes.
