Police have released the identity of the people involved in the fatal shooting after a vehicle pursuit in Pocono Township Tuesday night.
Betty Jane Tibaldi, 54, of Mount Pocono, was fatally shot after police said she fired a gun at officers.
State police out of the Hazleton barracks issued an update Thursday.
Nello Ercole al Tibaldi, 77, also of Mount Pocono, was the driver of the car and has been charged with recklessly endangering another person and possession of a firearm prohibited.
Police said at 10:57 p.m., troopers from the Stroudsburg barracks were requested by township police to assist with a vehicle pursuit along state Route 611. Police said after the vehicle became disabled in the northbound lane of the highway, just north of Shine Hill Road, the man and woman repeatedly refused to exit the vehicle or comply with officers’ commands to do so.
As further commands were given to exit the vehicle, police said, it was determined the occupants had a gun inside the vehicle.
Police said officers established a perimeter and requested assistance from the state police Special Emergency Response Team. Once on scene, SERT members established contact with the occupants and said Nello Ercole al Tibaldi got out of the car, handing the gun to the woman. He was taken into custody.
Police said the woman then pointed the gun and fired toward troopers on scene. Troopers returned fire, striking the woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.
The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office and state police continue to investigate the matter.
