Nesquehoning VFW replaces flagpole

Members of Nesquehoning VFW Post 8008 gathered Wednesday evening for a flag-raising ceremony at the post’s new 50-foot flagpole at the western entrance to town.

The original pole, which stood at the intersection of routes 54 and 209, was knocked down by a motorist who failed to negotiate the curve over Memorial Day weekend.

Robert Paul of the VFW said that it was a lot of hard work by members of the post to get everything in place for the new pole.

He said the VFW added a 17-inch golden eagle to the top of the new flagpole, as well as an octagon base.

Paul thanked PPL Electric, which brought two bucket trucks to help raise the final two pieces of the pole Wednesday morning; as well as Michael Radocha of Radocha Excavating and Lenny Ruggiero, who did the concrete work.

The post raised the flag to full-staff before lowering to half-staff to honor the late Colin Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State, who passed away earlier this week.
