Local roundup: Results from Sept. 29

The Jim Thorpe girls cross-country team posted another impressive performance in a Schuylkill League meet on Wednesday.

The Olympians recorded a victory in girls tennis action, while the Palmerton and Northwestern field hockey teams also picked up wins.

CROSS COUNTRY

Jim Thorpe-Minersville-

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

The Jim Thorpe girls’ cross-country team posted a sweep in Schuylkill League action in Tamaqua.

The Olympians finished a perfect 3-0 on the day, while both Tamaqua boys’ and girls’ followed with 2-1 marks.

Katelyn Bos paced the Olympians with a second-place finish, while teammate Nicole Carroll followed with a fourth-place result.

Grace Stegemerten crossed the finish line in first in a time of 21:25 for the Raiders.

Ryan Bailor led the Olympians with a third-place finish in the boys’ meet, while Levi Kunkel recorded a Blue Raiders’ best with a sixth-place finish.

The Marian girls went 2-1 in a Schuylkill League meet with Shenandoah, Tri Valley and Mahanoy.

The Fillies posted wins over Mahanoy (26-29) and Shenandoah (16-39), but fell to Tri Valley by a narrow margin (27-28).

Grace Curnow’s runner-up finish in 22:19 paced the Marian girls.

Marian’s boys posted a win over Mahanoy (22-33) to go 1-2.

Albin Petschaeur (18:52) was third for the Colts.

The Lehighton boys’ cross-country team finished the day 2-1 in Schuylkill League action at North Schuylkill.

Owen Serfass paced the Indians with a fifth-place finish, while Brandon Hall placed 10th.

Katie Wojton recorded a Lady Indians’ best with an 11th-place finish.

Pine Grove-Lehighton

Haydn Williams’ goal in overtime lifted Pine Grove to a 2-1 Schuylkill League win over Lehighton.

Hunter Deichert knotted the game at 1-1 late in the second half for the Cardinals.

Matt Sofranko put the Indians (4-4-1 overall; 1-4-1 SL) on the board first before Pine Grove rallied.

Marian-Nativity

Nativity came away with a 5-0 win over Marian Tuesday.

FIELD HOCKEY

Northwestern-Pen Argyl

Three first-period goals helped Northwestern cruise to a 5-0 Colonial League victory over Pen Argyl.

Brynn Balliet and Brinley Rex scored two goals apiece and had an assist for the Tigers (6-6, 6-5). Claire Costa added a goal and an assist, while Cara Thomas finished with an assist.

Moravian Academy-Palmerton

Skylar Kohler’s two goals helped Palmerton run away with a 3-0 Colonial League win over Moravian Academy.

Ana Recker added the other goal for the Bombers (9-2 overall; 9-1 CL), while Sydney Frantz was credited with two assists.

GIRLS SOCCER

Pleasant Valley-Stroudsburg

Pleasant Valley and Stroudsburg played to a 0-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference tie.

PV (4-3-1 overall; 3-3-1 EPC) keeper Sam Merklin grabbed three saves to preserve the shutout.

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

It was a memorable day as Jim Thorpe knocked off perennial Schuylkill League power Pottsville for the first time in school history with a 3-2 overtime victory Tuesday.

With 6:27 left in overtime, the Olympians’ Mackenzie Yuhas provided the game-winner with a goal off a perfect set-up from Nicole Carroll to stun the Tide, who have won the last two Schuylkill League titles and hadn’t lost a single game in over a year.

Lauren LeKites put the Olympians on the board first, but two goals from Ava Goodman gave the Tide a 2-1 lead midway through the second half.

With 10 minutes left, JT’s Riley Rushatz pushed a pass to Olivia Rosenberger, who finished it off to tie the game.

GIRLS TENNIS

Pleasant Valley-Bethlehem Catholic

Bethlehem Catholic defeated Pleasant Valley 6-1 in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.

Mariana Berragan and Sophia Berragan paired up in doubles’ play to post the Bears’ lone win.

Jim Thorpe moved to 9-5 on the season thanks to earning a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Palisades.

Gabby Nunez and Tara McLean posted victories in singles’ play, while the Olympians’ doubles’ team of Kaylinn Trine and Taylor provided the match-winning point with a hard-fought win.
