Local Roundup: Results from Sept. 24

Lehighton gained wins in boys soccer and field hockey on Saturday, while Tamaqua earned victories in boys soccer and tennis.

Other wins came from Jim Thorpe’s girls soccer team, and the Palmerton and Northwestern field hockey squads.

GIRLS SOCCER

N. Schuylkill-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe received hat tricks from both Mackenzie Yuhas and Olivia Rosenberger to cruise past North Schuylkill, 11-0, in Schuylkill League action.

Yuhas, who also had an assist, posted her three goals in the first half as the Olympians built a 7-0 lead.

Lauren LeKites added two goals and a pair of assists, while Alexis Marotto and Nicole Carroll each finished with a goal and two assists.

Others contributing to the big win were Gabby Cinicola (goal, assist), Riley Rushatz (assist), Kelli Hogarty (assist) and Maddy Hill (assist).

Thorpe, now 5-3-1, finished with a 25-1 advantage in shots.

Pottsville-Tamaqua

Ava Goodman and Grace Evans both scored two goals to lead Pottsville to a 6-2 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

The Blue Raiders (1-10) kept things close in the first half as a goal from Kolbe Robb kept the host team within 2-1 at the break.

The Tide, however, extended the lead early in the second half on tallies from Goodman and Lauren Kelly, and pulled away for the win.

Robb accounted for the other Tamaqua score, while Kimmy Rudy assisted on both Raider goals. Tamaqua goalie Zoe Seltzer finished with 34 saves.

BOYS SOCCER

Palmerton-Lehighton

Nick Zeigenfuss scored two goals and added an assist to lead Lehighton to a 4-0 non-conference victory over Palmerton.

Zeigenfuss registered both tallies in the opening half, while Matthew Sofranko also scored before the break to give the Indians a 3-0 halftime advantage.

The winners also received a goal from Mason Marchessault, and assists from Tyler Rehrig and Levi Monk.

Bryce Miller made five saves to earn the shutout. The Bombers’ Aiden Wentz finished with 18 stops.

Lehighton evened its record at 3-3-1, while Palmerton dropped to 1-9.

Marian-Wilson

Wilson won its second straight match, rolling past Marian 14-1 in a non-league contest.

The Warriors (5-6-0) have outscored opponents 29-1 in their last two matches.

Midfielder Ian Mikita scored the single goal for the Colts (0-6-0) via a penalty kick.

Northern Lehigh-Tamaqua

Tamaqua’s Wyatt Steigerwalt accounted for all the scoring as the Blue Raiders posted a 2-0 non-conference victory over Northern Lehigh.

Both Steigerwalt tallies came in the opening half, with Jathan Krall assisting on the first and Cooper Ansbach on the second.

The Bulldogs’ Ethan Kunkle finished with 11 saves in goal.

Tamaqua improved to 3-5 with the win, while Nolehi dropped to 0-8.

FIELD HOCKEY

Lehighton-Pleasant Valley

Lehighton’s Madison Brown scored in overtime to give the Indians a 1-0 victory over Pleasant Valley.

The Bears finished with a 15-12 edge in shots, while Lehighton held a 9-6 advantage in corners.

The win upped Lehighton’s record to 6-4, with PV falling to 2-6.

Wilson-Palmerton

Anna Recker’s fourth-quarter goal broke a scoreless tie and lifted Palmerton to a 1-0 Colonial League victory over Wilson.

Sydney Frantz assisted on the tally, which helped the Blue Bombers improve to 7-2.

Palmerton finished with 12 shots on goal to Wilson’s 10.

Bangor-Northwestern

Brinley Rex recorded a natural hat trick, with all three goals coming in the second quarter, to lift Northwestern to a 5-2 Colonial League victory over Bangor.

The Slaters jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Alena De Rea and Emily Trotto before the Tigers and Rex rallied for the win.

After Rex erased the defeicit, Northwestern also received third-period scores from Claire Costa and Carsyn VanNorman.

The Tigers, who improved to 4-5, were actually outshot in the contest by a 10-8 margin.

TENNIS

Tamaqua-Hazleton

Sabrina Pratt and Emily Antonio both posted singles wins to help Tamaqua gain a 3-2 victory over Hazleton.

The Blue Raiders (3-8) also picked up a key doubles win from the team of Brooke Williams and Helen Florea.
