Carbon man charged with assaulting baby

A Carbon County man has been jailed, charged with assaulting his five-month-old son.

State police at Hazleton identified the suspect as Brandon John Gombert, 25, of 92A Berwick St., Beaver Meadows.

Troopers said on Sept. 14 at 4:20 p.m. they were dispatched to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton Campus, for a 5-month-old male with a fractured femur. The attending ER physician advised troopers that the child had X-ray evidence of previous injuries which were in various stages of healing, including head fractures, a fractured clavicle and a fractured left tibia. The child was later transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest.

Troopers said the victim’s 8-year-old sister was evaluated for child abuse at the Lehigh Children’s Advocacy Center. During this evaluation she made statements implicating the father, Gombert. The sister described the events of how Gombert broke the infant’s femur. This information, in conjunction with an interview with the doctor of Child Protective Medicine, at the LVH, led to the arrest of Gombert.

He has been charged with aggravated assault of a victim less than 13, a felony 1; endangering the welfare of children, felony 3; simple assault, misdemeanor 1; and harassment.

He was taken into custody during a child custody hearing at the Carbon County courthouse in Jim Thorpe. He was arraigned before a district judge and committed to the county prison in Nesquehoning in lieu of $150,000 straight cash bail. Records indicate he has since been bonded out of prison.
