Palmerton festival: Flowerheads pay tribute to the ’60s

The Large Flowerheads, a throwback to the Groovy ’60s, will perform from 6:15-7 p.m. Friday at the Palmerton festival.

They’ve been entertaining audiences with hits from the British Invasion to Woodstock since 2007 and opened for Peter Noone & Herman’s Hermits, The 5th Dimension, the Guess Who and the Vogues.

The band has been the winner of Lehigh Valley Music Awards “Best Entertaining Band” for nine years in a row.

Members of the band are Maureen “Moe” Jerant (drums and guitar), Greg Geist (rhythm guitar and drums), Bill Trexler (lead guitar and bass) Dave Follweiler (keyboard and accordion), and Colleen Zajacik (bass and percussion)

Zajacik says, “All members of the band are passionate about music from the ’60s era. It’s the music they grew up with when they were kids.”

The band started as a way to keep the ’60s magic alive.

“At the time they started the band, no one else was playing music from the ’60s and they knew there was a hunger for it, so they decided to fill the niche,” she said.

The hits of the ’60s included diverse music styles including British invasion, folk, Motown, sunshine pop, psychedelic rock and more. “After a Large Flowerheads show - after people have been dancing and singing along all night - almost everyone feels more joyful and even younger,” Zajacik said.

Band favorites include “California Dreamin’?” by the Mamas & Papas, “Daydream Believer” from the Monkees, “Penny Lane” and “Back in the USSR” by the Beatles, “More Today than Yesterday” by Spiral Staircase, “Baby It’s You” by Smith, “River Deep” by Tina Turner and “We Gotta Get Outta this Place” by The Animals.

Their most requested tunes include “Bobby McGee,” “I Got You Babe,” “Born to Be Wild,” “Sweet Caroline” and “White Rabbit Tribute to the Groovy ’60s”
