It is one of the most pivotal points of American history; Sept. 11, 2001.
The national significance of the event was not lost on the organizers of the Palmerton Community Festival.
The Palmerton Area Girl Scouts service unit will lead a 9/11 remembrance service during this year’s Palmerton Community Festival.
Scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 11 on the main stage, the service will feature guest speaker Carbon County Common Pleas Judge Steven Serfass.
“The Palmerton United Veterans Organization will also be a big part of it and we’ll have musical performances by the Girl Scouts as well as a poetry reading,” organizer Jodi Smale said. “It is set up in a way that the girls will be retelling the timeline of 9/11 and highlighting the importance of remembering the innocent victims who died or were injured in the attacks.”
Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks, and the crash sites represented the largest crime scene in FBI history.
With the festival falling during the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Smale said it was imperative that a tribute take place.
“We just coordinated right alongside of our veterans to kind of highlight that our community is still recognizing the significance of the attacks and the impact that it has had on our country,” Smale said.
The Girl Scout Promise is to serve God and country. Smale said an event of this nature is directly related to educating the girls about “how this has impacted our country and what we can do as good citizens to improve our communities, and to help in times of need.”
