Man wanted for various crimes apprehended

A Jim Thorpe man wanted for various crimes has been apprehended.

After receiving tips and actionable intelligence from members of the community, on Sept. 2 the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office along with the Jim Thorpe Police Department and officers from the Carbon County Adult Probation Office apprehended Dante Matos in Jim Thorpe.

Matos, 33, was wanted on a felony arrest warrant out of the Jim Thorpe Police Department for aggravated assault; two revocation of probation warrants out of the Adult Probation Office for drug charges; a Carbon County domestic relations warrant, and a warrant out of the Wilkes-Barre Police Department for failure to appear for a charge of simple assault.

When officers arrived at the target location, they came into contact with Laura Simmons, 32, the girlfriend of Matos, who stated he was not present and she had not seen him in several days.

Throughout the interview with Simmons, she continued to deny that Matos was present.

After being granted access to the residence, officers and deputies conducted a slow and methodical search and discovered Matos attempting to conceal himself in a basement crawl space.

Matos was removed from the crawl space and swiftly taken into custody.

Simmons is being charged with hindering the apprehension of a fugitive for providing false information to law enforcement.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Ryan Poeldnurk of the Jim Thorpe Police Department:

At 7:21 a.m. March 7, Poeldnurk was dispatched to a home on West Fourth Street for a report of a man who was just assaulted and threatened with a handgun.

Upon arrival, Poeldnurk made contact with the victim outside of his residence.

He had a bloody laceration on his forehead, red marks on his neck, and large scratches on his back and arms.

The victim said he was inside his residence when a verbal argument ensued between himself and another individual.

Some time after, Matos had entered the home and confronted the victim.

At that time, the victim said he was punched several times by Matos, and then he was grabbed by his head and put into a choke hold to the point where he could not breathe and almost lost consciousness.

The victim said that he was thrown around a bedroom and thrown down a flight of stairs.

After leaving the residence, the victim said that Matos showed him a silver/gray revolver on his side, and threatened to shoot and kill him if he called the police.

The victim then fled the residence and immediately called police, at which time Poeldnurk made contact with two individuals inside the residence who stated that Matos had left before Poeldnurk’s arrival.

Video surveillance of the incident from the residence showed that Matos was greeted at the front door before the incident, and then left before Poeldnurk’s arrival.

The victim was treated for his injuries at St. Luke’s Lehighton Campus, and later transferred to St. Luke’s Bethlehem for further treatment due to a closed fracture of his thyroid cartilage in his neck.

Matos faces charges of aggravated assault; strangulation; simple assault; and harassment.

He is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $75,000 straight bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Sept. 15 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
