Residents in Weissport will be happy to know that the levee along the Lehigh River through the borough passed inspection by the Army Corps of Engineers. The inspection was done just a few weeks before it was put to the test last week with the remnants of Hurricane Ida.
Borough President Arland Moyer Jr. said the water only made it to the bottom of the levee, so there was no danger of flooding at all.
The next inspection will be in 2022 by the Department of Environmental Protection. The two groups alternate the inspections.
“We’re going to be looking in the very near future to get a grant to replace the piping down near the ball field,” Moyer said. “It is starting to rot away. We’ll have to get a grant and have the engineer go take a look at it.”
While the levee held back the waters, the canal apparently did flood and damaged some of the towpath.
