The body of a Schuylkill County male resident was found in the A-hole, a strip mining pit, in Girardville Thursday.
His name has not yet been released. State Police at Frackville are investigating the death.
Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner L. David Truskowsky said on Friday that he was dispatched to the scene about 8:10 p.m. and pronounced the man dead at 11 p.m.
He went as a member of the coroner’s office and dive team member of the West End Fire and Rescue Mahanoy City. Truskowsky said he swam over to retrieve the victim’s body.
He said the death is not considered suspicious.
Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David J. Moylan III said a post-mortem CT scan will be done at the Simon Kramer Cancer Institute, New Philadelphia at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Depending on the results, a traditional autopsy is possible at the Dauphin County Forensic Center.
He said the man was “in an advanced state of decomposition” when found.
