Man assaults woman, then steals her purse

A man has been charged with assaulting a woman and then stealing her purse.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Jared Green of the Franklin Township Police Department in the case against Jonathon Rutman:

At 4:47 a.m. Aug. 24, Green was dispatched through the Carbon County Communications Center to the location of Indian Hill Road and Long Run Road for a reported assault by Rutman, 37, no known address.

The caller was identified as the victim.

Green, along with officer Trevin Green of the Lehighton Police Department, arrived at the scene where the last known location was.

The victim was gone on arrival, and officers searched the area around the intersection looking for the victim, with no success.

Officers went to a place in the 100 block of Cedar Street to see if they could make contact with the victim, but the communications center received a phone call from the victim that she was at the Franklin Township Police Department.

Officers made contact with the victim at the police department, at which time she provided a written statement that Rutman threatened to damage her vehicle and her mother’s if she did not meet.

The victim also claimed that Rutman accused her of sleeping with other individuals, which led to an argument between the two.

During the argument, Rutman was irate, leading him to strike the victim in the right side of her jaw, causing her glasses to fly off her face and through the car window, which was located in the roadway.

Rutman then stole the victim’s purse and fled on foot.

Rutman faces charges of robbery; simple assault; receiving stolen property; and theft by unlawful taking or disposition.

He is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $40,000 straight bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Sept. 8 before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.
