Dog found abandoned along the Burma Road in Saint Clair

A male Shih Tzu was found in a crate Sunday abandoned and left in the rain on the Burma Road in Saint Clair.

Tremont resident Tina McKeown was driving in the area when she noticed the dog, which had no ID tag. It was moving about in a small cage when she put it in her vehicle around 6:30 p.m.

She called the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA in Pine Grove and dropped off the dog, shelter manager Lori Sult said Monday.

“She started crying” when she found it, Sult said of the dog, which likely was there for the day.

There was no food, water or blanket in the cage.

“He is actually super friendly,” Sult said.

The 3- to 4-year-old Shih Tzu is at the Pine Grove Animal Clinic after an employee of the shelter took him there Monday.

“This is severe neglect,” Sult said.

The exact extent of his medical condition is unknown, but Sult said he has “a very bad skin infection,” and a severe eye and ear infection. He also has a facial infection. His paws have matted hair 2 to 3 inches thick.

Workers had to shave his hair.

She said the dog weighs about 10 pounds; however, some of that is the matted hair.

Dana Smith-Mansell, a humane cruelty officer, was given the information.

“If we found out who did this, we can have her press charges,” Sult said.

Burma, the name shelter employees picked, will potentially be available for adoption at a later date. To help him, donations are accepted at the Pine Grove Animal Clinic, 570-345-0880, or by donating through the shelter Facebook page, Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA.
