On this date: Aug. 19, 1967

Lance Cpl. Daniel McDermott, U.S. Marines, was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for bravery in action in Vietnam by Lt. Gen. V.H. Krulak, representing the Secretary of the Navy.

The citation notes on March 20, 1967, McDermott displayed exceptional courage and fearless initiative in responding to the call of two wounded Marines, undoubtedly saving their lives when the company came under intense mortar fire. McDermott left the protection of his fighting hole and ran through the fire to the side of the wounded men, helping them to move to safety where they received immediate medical attention.

McDermott’s mother is the former Charlotte Rodgers of Coaldale.
