It’s not only restaurants and mini-marts that have “help wanted” pleas.
The Carbon County Commissioners said Thursday they need people to fill positions at the county prison and at the office of Children and Youth.
“Children and youth are in dire need for qualified people,” said Wayne E. Nothstein, chairman of the board of commissioners.
He said the one snag is that they must have passed a Civil Service examination.
So desperate is the need that the county could be in trouble of losing a Children and Youth Services license if more employees aren’t hired. “If we lose the license, we lose funding,” Nothstein said.
In next year’s budget, there’s a request to add nine more positions in that office, he said.
He said the vacancies are difficult to fill because not only must the county approve, so must the state. “We did interviews with seven people,” he said. “All were rejected by the Department of Health.”
The other department where there’s a need for applicants is corrections, Nothstein said.
He said, “All counties (in Pennsylvania) are having the same problem. One county is down 22 officers.”
One of the things which some applicants don’t like regarding prison employment, and which is required, is working overtime.
He said the overtime is necessary at various times, including if someone calls in sick or doesn’t show up for work.
Regarding both offices, Nothstein said work in either department “is not for everyone.”
