Claridge Properties Inc., New York City, has been granted a special use permit and variance by the Tamaqua Zoning Hearing Board to convert the former Majestic Hotel and Theater building in the community as a multifamily dwelling unit project.

The Claridge firm is the same company that developed the Navigation Building Apartment Complex in Tamaqua.

John R. Rosenthal, company official, said it is contemplated as a 67 one-bedroom structure with six additional two-bedroom apartments and living quarters for a building superintendent.

He said the rehabilitation project will cost an estimated $1.9 million, with the overall costs to exceed $2.7 million.
