Walnutport to battle park vandalism

An ordinance to help curtail vandalism at its playground area will be crafted in Walnutport.

Council instructed borough solicitor Michael Corriere put together the ordinance that will discourage trespassing at the playground area and canal area from dusk to dawn.

It was noted nighttime fishing will still be allowed at the canal.

Councilman David Stankovic said he was asked by Walnutport Playground Association President Brian Filchner for council to consider a dusk-to-dawn ordinance.

Mayor Wayne Weidner noted that he received a phone call from Stankovic.

“I did get a phone call there was a problem with the dugout,” Weidner said.

Councilman Michael Gaston added, “Things are getting destroyed up there.”

Borough police Chief Pete Wayda said in instances such as this, police should be notified.

“This is the first I’m hearing anything about this,” Wayda said.

Wayda told council he thinks it’s a wise idea.

“Because then we have teeth to remove them,” he said.

The only anticipated cost to the borough is the purchase of about 10 signs.

Wayda said a benefit to having an ordinance is that all fine money comes to the borough if there’s damage.

It was noted there has been more of a police presence there, something Councilwoman Jennifer Wentz attested to.

“I’ve seen them up there,” Wentz said.

Wayda said it helps when residents report issues they see to the police department.

He said such an incident unfolded when someone who had just moved to the borough posted on Facebook that he saw an someone throw a firework into the canal which killed about 25 fish.

That incident raised the ire of Gaston, who said such acts cannot be tolerated.

“I would like to know who these clowns are,” Gaston said. “I would like everybody to know who their neighbor is.”
