The victims of a hit-and-run crash along Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County on Wednesday have been identified by police.
State police at Frackville said Kaitlin Smith, 27, of Pottsville, was the driver of a 2002 Subaru Outback that crashed after being struck twice by another vehicle whose driver fled the scene. She was flown by medical helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, with what troopers said were serious injuries.
Two passengers with her, Samuel Castorina, 27, of Pottsville, and Jaimylee Matthews, 21, of Fort Collins, Colorado, were injured and taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital East, Pottsville. Both were treated and released.
Troopers said Smith was southbound in the left passing lane with a sports utility vehicle, possibly a Chevrolet, in the right lane. The SUV left its lane of travel and veered into the left lane striking the Subaru. The Subaru veered onto the east shoulder, then back into the left lane where it was struck a second time by the SUV. The second collision caused the Subaru to roll over several times ejecting Smith.
The driver of the SUV stopped and approached a passenger from the Subaru, then re-entered his vehicle and fled the scene southbound.
The roadway was shutdown for several hours due to the crash.
Troopers said the suspect is a white man, believed to be between 30 and 40 years of age, with brown or black hair, wearing a black collared shirt with a logo on the left chest and dark pants.
Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call troopers at 570-874-5300.
