The Northwestern Lehigh Athletic Department announced that Duran Porrino has stepped down as head baseball coach. Porrino cited the desire to spend more time with his wife and three young children as the reason for his resignation.
In announcing Porrino’s resignation, Northwestern Athletic Director Jason Zimmerman, said, “We appreciate everything coach Porrino has done for our program and wish him and his family nothing but the best.”
Porrino coached the Tigers in 2016 before taking the 2017 season off to spend time with his newborn twins. He returned in 2018 and has coached the Tigers since that time. Porrino was also a long time Northwestern assistant coach under Len Smith prior to taking on the head coaching position.
During his head coaching career, Porrino led the Tigers to a Colonial League championship (2021) and a District 11 4A championship (2018). The Tigers were also league runner-ups in 2016 and 2019 and District 11 4A runner-ups in 2019 and 2021.
in addition to releasing the information on Porrino’s departure, Northwestern also announced that Scott Cooperman has be approved by the school board to take over as the position of head baseball coach.
“We look forward to coach Cooperman joining our staff and bringing his vast knowledge and coaching philosophy to our Northwestern Lehigh baseball program,” Zimmerman said.
Cooperman has coached at the college, high school, and youth level and brings significant experience to the position.
Prior to being named the Northwestern coach, Cooperman has been the head coach at Lehigh Carbon Community College (2009), William Allen High School (1996-1999) the Lehigh Valley Baseball Academy (2012-2019), the South Parkland Youth Association (2000-2012), and the West End Allentown Youth Association (1987-1999). He also served as the assistant varsity coach William Allen from 1986 to1995.
In addition to his time coaching baseball, Cooperman also served as the Director of Athletics for William Allen from 1999-2020.
