Nesquehoning scales down Memorial Day ceremony
Nesquehoning’s United Veterans Organization didn’t let rain and cold weather, or a crash that took out its one flagpole, stop the men and women from going out and honoring the fallen veterans of the community.
The group held two events, one on Sunday and another on Memorial Day, which was smaller this year because of the pandemic. Typically, the borough hosts a Memorial Day parade through the town to the Nesquehoning VFW post home, where a ceremony takes place, but this year’s events were more intimate.
Men and women from the VFW, auxiliary, Navy Club and Legion gathered Sunday afternoon and traveled to several locations throughout the borough, holding a brief blessing, gun salute and taps at each location.
The event was slightly delayed as some members had to go to a vehicle crash that knocked over a flagpole and retrieve the post’s American flag that had been flying over the three-point intersection.
At the bridge over the Nesquehoning Creek on Mermon Avenue, Christa Acciarito threw a bouquet of poppies into the water as a sign of remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
On Monday, members of the Nesquehoning UVO again gathered, holding brief ceremonies at the veterans memorials at the intersection of routes 209 and 54; St. Patrick’s cemetery on West Catawissa Street; and at the post home on East Center Street, where the roll call of the veterans who passed since last Memorial Day was read.
