2021 Memorial Day events

Sunday

• Coaldale: The American Legion Post 170 and the VFW Post of Coaldale are joining together for Memorial Day service. The first service will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at the police station. The Panther Valley High School ROTC shall support Post 170 and VFW. The brief event for Seek Coaldale will take place on the grass area by the three flags poles around 2:30-2:45 p.m.

• Nesquehoning: The Nesquehoning VFW will do memorial salutes at the borough’s outlying cemeteries beginning at noon. The event will begin at the Knauf Memorial on the Broad Mountain and continue to the cemeteries on the east end of town, then the memorial sites and cemetery in New Columbus, then the memorial by the Hauto Fire Company.

• Polk Township: 25th annual Memorial Day program at the Veterans Memorial and Adam’s Faith Garden in Kresgeville at 2 p.m. Sunday.

• Slatington: On Sunday, the American Legion Allen O. Delke Post 16 in Slatington, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 16, and the Legion Riders will conduct services at nine outlying cemeteries. The Legion Auxiliary will provide lunch afterward.

Monday

• Eldred Township: Memorial Day service in honor of the Veterans at 11 a.m. Monday at the Veterans Memorial at 490 Kunkletown Road. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs.

• Gilbert: American Legion Post 927 will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday. Indoor guests are limited to 60. A light lunch will follow the outdoor portion of the event. Call 570-977-3046.

• Jim Thorpe: American Legion Post 304 members will meet at the Legion Post at 7:45 a.m. on Monday. They will then conduct services throughout the borough. The agenda is: 8:15 a.m.: Immaculate Conception Cemetery; 8:45 a.m.: Evergreen Cemetery; 9:10 a.m.: Saint Joseph Cemetery; 10 a.m.: Mauch Chunk Cemetery. Services will consist of a brief welcome, prayer, rifle salute and taps.

• Lansford: The Lansford American Legion Post 123 will conduct its annual Memorial Day Services at 9 a.m. Monday at the veterans monument in Kennedy Park. Carbon County District Attorney Michael Greek will be the main speaker. The Panther Valley High School Band and the JROTC will also participate. Flags have been placed at the Summit Hill Cemeteries by the Lansford Legion. Anyone who might have been missed is asked to contact the Lansford Legion at 645-9795 and leave a message.

• Lehighton: The Lehighton United Veterans Organization Memorial Day services at 10:30 a.m. in the upper Lehighton Park Amphitheater.

• Nesquehoning: Members of the Nesquehoning VFW will meet at the VFW Memorial on the west end of Catawissa Street at 9:45 a.m. A ceremonial march will start at 10 a.m. The VFW members will then proceed down Catawissa Street to the Veterans Memorial next to Turkey Hill and conclude at the cemetery in front of the VFW Post home on Center Street. A roll call will be read in front of the VFW, as well as a salute for the veterans who passed from last Memorial Day.

• Palmerton: Palmerton United Veterans Organization Memorial Day Parade at 10 a.m. Monday.

• Slatington: The Legion family will hold services at the remaining three cemeteries and at the Trout Creek covered bridge. Memorial Day services will be held at Memorial Park instead of Union or Fairview cemeteries. The Slatington 101st Memorial Day parade will form on South street at 9:30 a.m. The parade to Memorial Park starts at 10 a.m. and will go down Main Street to the park, followed by the main service.

• Summit Hill: The Memorial Day Parade, Carbon County’s largest tribute to our military, will step off at 11 a.m. Monday on Ludlow Street in the center of the community.

• Tamaqua: Memorial Day parade, 10 a.m. Monday hosted by the C.H. Berry Post 0173. The Grand Marshal is Robert Boyle, a U.S. Navy veteran who served during the Korean War. The poppy queen is Lailul Creitz, a junior member of the ALA. Staging will begin at 9 a.m. by the old Maff Motors Building on East Broad Street. The Legion’s Honor Guard will fire a volley over the Tamaqua War Memorial. Following will be a service at the Odd Fellows Cemetery. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be at the Tamaqua Arts Center.
