Woman, child die in Hegins fire
By AMY MARCHIANO
A woman and her son died and three are left homeless after a fire in Hegins Township Saturday.
Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner’s John Mika and Albert Barnes responded after being dispatched at 10:26 a.m.
Barnes pronounced Tanwya Bowman, who he said was in her 40s, and Daniel Bowman,4, dead at the scene.
A supervisor with the Schuylkill County Communications Center said a call came in at 10 a.m. for a structure fire at 1000 E. Main St. It was later upgraded to a working fire.
Hegins Valley Fire Rescue Fire Chief Chad Richards said when he arrived on scene it was a “fully involved house fire.”
Containing the fire took three to four hours because “it just kept flaring back at us.”
State Police Fire Marshal John Burns responded and is in charge of the investigation.
“It’s under investigation,” Richards said.
A damage estimate was not provided. No firefighters were injured, he said.
Patti Daley, disaster responder with the American Red Cross, said all who live at the house were home during the fire. Ann and Mark Bowman, parents of Tanwya, lived in apartment A. While the fire victims resided in apartment B. Mark Jr. Bowman, son of Ann and Mark, lived in apartment C.
Daley said she does not know if they had insurance or if the home had working smoke detectors.
Fire companies from Hegins Valley Fire Rescue, Hubley Township, Tower City, Tremont, Upper Mahantongo, Pine Grove, Butler Township, Minersville, ReillyTownship, Schuylkill Haven and Dauphin County responded. Ambulances from Hegins and Tremont were on scene.
Daley said the house was destroyed. The Red Cross provided food, clothing and lodging.
