May 21, 1960 - Tamaqua’s Lafay Hope and Lehighton’s Roy Semmel both win events at the annual District 11 Class A track and field championships, held at Pottsville. Hope holds off Bangor’s Timothy East to capture the mile in a time of 4:40.7. Semmel clears 11-3 in the pole vault to earn the gold medal. The Indians’ Dave Reppert turns in a second-place finish in the 440, while the Palmerton mile relay team also gains runner-up status. Third-place finishes are posted by Tamaqua’s George Barron (shot put), Slatington’s Don Peters (100) and Palmerton’s Ron Fabian (broad jump).
