May 19, 1951 - Three area athletes capture gold medals, with one doing so in record time, in the District 11 Class A track and field championships. Lehighton’s Lamont Smith and Pottsville’s Ray Lowthert pull away on the back stretch of the final lap of the mile, with Smith breaking the tape in a time of 4:35.2 to better the mark of 4:37.5 set by Bethlehem’s Tom McCall in 1932. Palmerton’s Doug Shiner also gets to stand atop the podium by besting the field in the 440. Shiner registers a time of 54.1. Tamaqua’s Bill Wetterau ties for first with two others, clearing 10-2.
