Boni wins nomination for clerk
Incumbent Tyra L. Boni was successful in her bid for reelection during Tuesday’s primary election.
She defeated newcomer Sydney Wernett to win the Republican nomination for clerk of courts in the only contested race for a Carbon County row office seat.
Boni garnered 3,924 votes, while Wernett received 2,554. An additional 1,056 write-in votes were cast on the Democrat side. The names for those votes have not yet been announced.
“I’m extremely grateful and appreciative of all those who came out and voted to support me and to those who assisted in my campaign,” Boni said. “I look forward to all that is to come and to represent the Republican Party in the general election.”
Boni was sworn in as the clerk of courts in 2020 for a two-year term that finished out the term of former clerk of courts William McGinley. McGinley abruptly retired in 2018 and was later charged with stealing thousands of dollars from the office.
She defeated Francine Heaney of Nesquehoning, who had been serving in that capacity as clerk of courts after being nominated by the state, for the two-year term in the 2019 elections.
Other county row offices
In other county races, Fran Heaney, a Democrat, was uncontested in the treasurer’s race and received 3,775 votes.
Longtime treasurer Ron Sheehan, also a Democrat, is not seeking another term.
Heaney will square off against Republican Kevin Zelienka in November. Zelienka received 4,970 votes on Tuesday.
Current Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans Court Jean Papay, a Republican, who was unopposed in the election, received 5,520 votes on Tuesday. A total of 159 write-in votes on the Democratic side were also recorded.
